Sex Toy Popularity

Tired of scrolling through a bunch of random reviews?

Join us as we delve into a research study conducted by The Journal of Sexual Research titled “What Drives Sex Toy Popularity?” This study takes the burden off female sex toy buyers by assessing hundreds of toys’ popularity ratings, customer star ratings, and levels of customer engagement. Armed with this information, buyers can confidently identify the key factors to consider while shopping. Enjoy!

Main Findings and Highlights

Consumer Preferences

Consumers prefer sex toys that prioritize comfort and affordability over exact anatomical mimicry. In our example, we show the Keon Sex Machine and the Ritual Sol. While the Keon Sex Machine is truly advanced in the world of pleasure devices, the Ritual Sol seems to offer more non-anatomical comfort at a very reasonable price.

Impact of Realism

Realistic features of dildos like skin color and veins don’t necessarily make sex toys more popular. In our example, we have the Squarepegtoys Leo and the Naughty Secretes. The Squarepegtoys Leo features an anatomy-like shape including veins and curvature. However, the naught secrets offer impressive vibrating pleasure in a simple bullet shape.

Price Sensitivity

Lower-priced items are more popular, highlighting the importance of affordability. In our example, we have the Cowgirl Ride-On Vibrator and the Pearl 3. As you can probably tell just by looking, the Cowgirl Ride-On Vibrator is “heaven in a machine” but comes at quite a cost. Whereas the Pearl 3 vibrator is still guaranteed to bring you to the big O (Orgasm) for a fraction of the cost.

Dimensions of Toys

Girth is important for popularity, with a slight preference for above-average circumference but not excessively large toys. In our example here we have Pure Plug and the Squarepegtoys Leo. We picked these to highlight the importance of experimenting with girth regardless of vaginal or anal pleasure.

Vibration Features

Vibrating functions don’t significantly increase the popularity of vaginally insertable toys. For the vibration examples, we choose the Vibepad and the Smart Wand 2. We want to remind our community that while this article is primarily referring to vaginally inserted toys, this concept of vibration features can be taken to other categories like Grinding Mats and Wand Vibrators.

Quantitative Perspective On Consumer Preferences

One of the measures of this study was done using B (Beta Coefficient). This is a measure used in regression analyses to indicate the strength and direction of the relationship between a variable (e.g., insertable length, circumference) and the outcome of interest (e.g., popularity, price). A positive B value indicates a positive relationship (as one increases, so does the other), and a negative B value indicates a negative relationship (as one increases, the other decreases).

Key Insights with Numeric Values:

  • Circumference (Girth): A decrease in circumference is associated with an increase in popularity (B = −0.176), highlighting a preference for moderately girthed toys over larger ones.
  • Insertable Length: The length of the toy did not significantly impact its popularity, but longer toys tend to be more expensive (B = 4.069), indicating that size might be a factor in pricing.
  • Realistic Material and Features: Realistic material and specific features like skin color and veins did not significantly impact popularity. However, skin color affects the price (B = 12.007), suggesting that a realistic appearance could make toys more expensive, while visible veins make them less so (B = −16.141).
  • Vibrating Feature: The presence of a vibrating function does not significantly affect a toy’s popularity but does increase its price (B = 11.300), which might influence consumer purchasing decisions.
  • Price Sensitivity: There’s a clear indication that higher-priced toys are less popular among consumers (B = −0.008), emphasizing the role of affordability in the sexual wellness market.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights for the sexual wellness industry, indicating a shift towards practicality, comfort, and economic viability in consumer preferences for sex toys. It highlights the potential for innovation in product design and marketing strategies that focus on meeting these consumer needs, suggesting a broader scope for diversity in product offerings that prioritize sensation and user experience over strict realism.
